What does this indicator measure? |

|
Beginning April 30, 2009, all Ontario hospitals with intensive care
units, including Brockville General Hospital, will publicly report their
rates of Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP). These rates will be
reported on a quarterly basis (every three months) through the
Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Critical Care Information System
and posted to our website.
It is important to monitor rates of VAP because this infection is
very serious, can prolong hospitalization and sometimes result in death.
VAP is a serious lung infection that can occur in patients who need to
use a ventilator to assist with breathing. About 15 per cent of patients
on ventilators develop VAP and about half of those may die as a result. |
