Information Session on Youth Suicide May 25th
Brockville/Leeds and Grenville—The Royal Ottawa Health Care Group (ROHCG),
Brockville General Hospital (BGH), Brockville Collegiate Institute and Thousand Islands Secondary School are hosting
a public information session on youth suicide May 25th at Brockville Collegiate Institute.
“Youth Suicide: Recognizing Risk and Talking About It” will explore the issue
of youth suicide, the second greatest cause of death among young people in our society today. Led by Annmarie Nicholson,
Director of Volunteer Services and Trainer for Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training with ROHCG, the presentation
will cover the causes of suicide among young people, how to recognize risk and how to respond when someone you care about
needs help.
The presentation is May 25th at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium of Brockville
Collegiate Institute, 90 Pearl Street East in Brockville. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and there is no admission. Registration
is suggested and you may do so HERE, or call Maggie Wheeler, BGH Communications
Officer, at 613-345-5649, ext. 1-1504.
An alarming 32% of young women and 18% of young men report having thoughts of
suicide. While females are twice as likely to attempt suicide, males complete suicide twice as often as women. When
suicide occurs, the question most often asked by those left behind is “Why?” and "How could we have prevented this?”
“Talking about youth suicide is the first step in prevention,” says ROHCG
Communications Coordinator Sue Riley. “Our hope is that this presentation will help us to continue as a community to not
only talk, but to listen as well.”
