Telethon Total Hits $184,000 for Palliative Care Services

Brockville: Bruce Wylie, Chair of the Annual 30-Hour Telethon for Palliative Care Services, says $184,000 is the highest total raised yet—and it’s all staying in the community.

“We have a generous and supportive community,” says Wylie, who has been Chair of the successful annual fundraiser for Brockville and District Palliative Care Services since 2004, “and there are two good reasons for that. First, there is nobody in the community that hasn’t been touched by loss and affected by palliative care. Second, people know the money raised here stays here. And that’s important to them.”

It’s been important for 27 years. The first Annual Telethon for Palliative Care was held in 1984. “We raised $29,369.00,” says Carol Davis, who has been Treasurer of the Telethon from the outset. “To date, through the Telethon we’ve donated $2,255,918.00 directly to palliative care,” she explains.

The fundraiser is coordinated entirely through the work of volunteers—a team, says Wylie, that refuses to quit. “I don’t do the work. They do. They’re amazing, mostly seniors, mostly women, and they do the 30 hours of the Telethon (without sleep) like a well-oiled machine.”

The funds raised go to the Brockville and District Hospice Palliative Care Service, a community service developed 30 years ago at the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital. Now part of Brockville General Hospital, the service has grown through the years from a single nurse to five consult nurses and over 100 trained volunteers who offer support at any point from diagnosis to bereavement—and beyond, for family members coping with loss. The program receives no government funding, operating entirely through funds provided by the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation with the support of local third party fundraising events—like the Telethon.

“We’re very proud to present this cheque,” says Wylie. “We had hit a 10-year plateau with the Telethon, staying around the $60,000 mark, when I came on as Chair in 2004. In 2005, we raised $120,000. And we have continued to exceed our previous totals every year since.”

The 28th Annual 30-Hour Telethon for Palliative Care Services will be held January 29th and 30th, 2011.

Telethon total is something to celebrate: Chair Bruce Wylie (standing, fourth from right) presents the $184,000 cheque to Tom Blanchard (standing, third from right), Vice Chair of the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation. Sharing the good moment are (seated, l – r) BGH staff Deb Bennett, Joan Schwarze, Patti Howlett, Cheryl Rennick, (standing, l- r) Sandra Thompson, Leslie Leeder, Sherry Anderson, BGH President and CEO Ray Marshall, Telethon Treasurer Carol Davis and BGH staff Charleen Findon.
