Brockville General Hospital Invited to Participate at National Conference
Leeds/Grenville—BGH staff earned presentation space at the national
Community and Hospital Infection Control Association (CHICA) Annual Conference held in Toronto May 29 to June 2.
Dana Finnegan-Yee, BGH Infection Control Coordinator, and Catherine Thorp,
BGH Medical Laboratory Technologist, hosted a poster display that explained the hospital’s successful containment and
eradication of the VRE outbreak in the hospital last year.
“The CHICA convention was an excellent educational opportunity,” says Finnegan-Yee, “and we were fortunate to have
the support from our organization to attend.”
Invited to make a 10-minute oral presentation on a new regional information system was Sue Schaub, BGH Medical
Laboratory Technologist and Laboratory Information Systems Specialist. BGH partnered with the Southeastern Ontario
Infection Control Network and four other hospitals in the region to create RICS—a Regional Infection Control System
for tracking hospital acquired infections.
“The purpose of the regional software is to give Infection Control (IC) professionals a tool to help in identifying
outbreaks, tracking ARO infections, and tracking patient admissions throughout the region to identify any IC
issues,” explains Schaub. “RICS will provide a common reporting platform to use for ministry reports and reports
that are presented at regular hospital IC meetings--allowing the regional infection control network to compare and
collect data form all sites in the region.”
