Health Policy Analyst to Speak at BGH Annual General Meeting June 13th

Leeds/Grenville—Dr. Michael Rachlis will present “Prescription for Excellence: What’s Wrong with Ontario’s Health System and How to Fix It” at the 126th Annual General Meeting for Brockville General Hospital (BGH) on June 13th.

Practicing as a private consultant in health policy analysis, Dr. Rachlis has consulted to the federal government, all ten provincial governments, and two royal commissions. He has been invited to make presentations to committees of the Canadian House of Commons and the Canadian Senate, as well as the United States House of Representatives and Senate.

Dr. Rachlis has lectured widely on health care issues. He is a frequent media commentator on health policy issues and the author of three national bestsellers about Canada's health care system. In 2010, the University of Manitoba conferred upon Dr. Rachlis a doctor of laws in recognition of his service to Canadian health policy.

“The health care system's poor performance is not due to lazy doctors or incompetent nurses,” says Rachlis. “Health professionals are highly motivated but work within structures which block efficient care. And basing our system on the value that all Canadians deserve excellent health care isn’t a problem either.”

In his presentation, Dr. Rachlis will describe the development of Ontario’s health system and then outline the necessary next steps for its re-design.

“Dr. Rachlis’ topic will be timely as the provincial election in October approaches,” says BGH President and CEO Ray Marshall. “Health care reform is sure to be a major topic of debate during the campaign and it will be very interesting to hear Dr. Rachlis’ prescription for change. I am very much looking forward to his presentation and I encourage anyone interested to attend.”

The AGM will be held Monday, June 13th at the BGH Charles Street Site cafeteria, with Dr. Rachlis’ presentation beginning at 7:00 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
