Hospital Volunteers Take on Hand Hygiene Challenge November 24th – 30th
Brockville—As part of the ongoing Patient Safety Month at Brockville General Hospital (BGH), the
Brockville General Volunteer Association (BGVA) is taking on a Hand Hygiene Challenge: Help 1000 people
wash their hands when arriving at BGH over five working days.
“One of the pillars of patient safety in any healthcare institution is hand hygiene,” says Dana
Finnegan-Yee, BGH Infection Control Coordinator. “It is a simple but powerful act in reducing the
transmission of disease.”
While BGH has hand sanitizers at all convenient points in the hospital, clients and visitors still often
forget to use them upon arrival, during their stay, and when leaving the building.
“Patient safety is a focus for everyone who provides a service within the hospital,” says BGVA Coordinator
Cheryl Marshall. “That includes the over 350 volunteers who donate thousands of hours to BGH and the people
it serves.
“We decided to take on the Hand Hygiene Challenge to participate directly in BGH Patient Safety Month
this November. So, our volunteers will be aiming to assist 1000 people over five business days with hand
hygiene.”
Starting Thursday, November 24th, BGVA volunteers will man the front entrance to the BGH Charles Street
Site “armed” with hand sanitizers. Those who wash their hands will receive a jacket sticker marking
their support of the five-day challenge.
“We have 1000 stickers to award,” says Marshall. “We’ll do it.”
Nursing icon Florence Nightingale was a life-long advocate of sanitary methods, including hand hygiene.
November 24th, the battle continues at BGH.
