BGH Welcomes New Orthopedic Surgeon

BROCKVILLE—Brockville General Hospital is pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Jason (Jay) Gambrel, Orthopedic Surgeon, to the ranks of its active privilege physicians.

Dr. Gambrel studied medicine at the University of Manitoba, followed with a residency at Queen’s University. His specialty is sports medicine, with a focus on shoulder injuries and chronic issues.

“With younger patients,” says Dr. Gambrel, “I’m usually dealing with sports-related injuries. With older patients, it tends to be chronic problems such as rotator cuff tears. We tend to overuse our shoulders throughout our lives,” he adds with a smile.

Dr. Gambrel also provides the full spectrum of orthopedic medicine, including all joint replacements, with an emphasis on arthroscopic methods (using a small camera inserted through a minimal incision to diagnose and repair).

Jay Gambrel and his family have relocated from Lindsay, Ontario, where he started his practice in 2005. Gambrel was looking for a small town practice where he could work as part of a team and make a greater contribution to the medical process. Gambrel’s wife is from Kingston, so the decision was made to look into moving closer to home with their young family.

“I was looking in this area,” says Gambrel, “and saw the opening for an orthopedic surgeon at BGH. I knew Paul Shim (another BGH orthopedic surgeon) from residency so I called him to see if there was a place for me here. Paul recommended BGH and the area, and said it was good timing to come.”

Gambrel says the BGH position is a good match for him.

“The guys [surgeons] here work well as a team, which means we get to manage a balance between work and personal life. With a two-and-half year old son, that’s important to me. I like being busy at work, but also having the flexibility to go home when I need to.”

Dr. Gambrel holds clinic hours at BGH on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, with Operating Room hours on Fridays. A referral from your family physician is required, and Dr. Gambrel’s office may be reached at 613-345-8341.
