Community Care and Share Golf Tournament Lives Its Name

Brockville—“Life is all about community,” says Cathy Thomas, manager of the Brockville Highland Golf Course and one of the driving forces behind the area’s newest golf tournament and fundraiser, the Community Care and Share Golf Tournament.

Created from the best of the former Prostate Cancer Research Golf Tournament in the spring of this year, the August 26th event is putting community first even before the first tee off.

The tournament is hosted by three local service clubs—the Brockville Lions Club, the Brockville and District Citivan Club, and the Brockville Kinsmen Club. This is a first in the Brockville area, making the event a special community effort from its inception.

The major benefactor of the tournament is the Brockville Cardiovascular Program (BCP), a new local rehabilitation service for people recovering from cardiac surgery, cardiac angioplasty or stenting. Opened in 2009 and based in Brockville General Hospital, the BCP is free for patients referred to the program and offers six- and twelve-week programs designed to assist with the post-operative journey to full recovery. The BCP receives no government funding, and is entirely supported by generous individuals, businesses, and groups such as the Community Care and Share Golf Tournament Committee.

Retired Brockville Police Chief Adrian Geraghty, this year's tournament committee chairman, says he had no hesitation taking the chair for such a worthy cause. “I’m proud to chair such a great committee with groups that have given so much to the community over the years.

“The BCP and the other groups we’ll support offer important services to this area. The BCP,” he adds, “is a vital local service to have and support. Recovery from heart problems is something that will touch most of us in the community, and it’s important to have the program here so recovering patients do not need to drive to Kingston or Ottawa for follow up.”

The tournament begins with 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. tee-offs, offers prizes such as the $25,000 Hole in One or a new car from Riverside Pontiac Buick, and ends with a buffet dinner hosted by another local service club—the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Brockville Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 96).

“So even the proceeds to the Legion from the dinner go back out to the community via the great work the Legion does in Brockville,” says Cathy Thomas. “I can honestly say that every cent raised by this event will stay in our community to support important works and services.”

Participation, says Thomas, means everyone contributing so everyone benefits—caring and sharing. And that’s what community is all about.

The tournament hosts 60 teams or 240 players and is already half full. Those who would like to register are encouraged to do so before August 15th at the Brockville Highland Golf Course by phone at 613-342-7883 or e-mail to info@highlandgolf.com.

Putting their hearts into it: Tournament Committee Chair Adrian Geraghty and Highlands manager Cathy Thomas show the new banner for the 1st Annual Community Care and Share Golf Tournament in support of the Brockville Cardiovascular Program.
