BGH Continues “business as usual”
During Current
MRSA Outbreak.
Brockville—Brockville General Hospital is presently dealing with a recent
outbreak of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and wants
area residents to know it is business as usual for hospital visitors.
MRSA is Staphylococcus (staph) bacteria that has become resistant to the
antibiotics commonly used to treat ordinary staph infections.
BGH Infection Control became aware that the number of hospital acquired (nosocomial)
MRSA had increased on June 30. BGH operates normally with a baseline of five
cases per month. Further testing continued over the weekend, and revealed
results at double the baseline (10 cases). An MRSA outbreak was declared on
Monday, July 5th.
Heather Crawford, VP Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive, is very
pleased with the rapid and efficient response by staff to the outbreak. She
adds that “the importance of good hand washing can never be
over-emphasized.”
Visiting hours remain the same, as do the visiting practices. Visitors are
asked to observe the following policies which are regular visiting
procedure:
· Please stay home if you are not feeling well, or if your immune
system is compromised.
· Perform hand hygiene (clean your hands) frequently when in
hospital, especially when entering or leaving the building.
· If you are visiting a patient in isolation, please wear protective
equipment as posted on the isolation sign.
· Please comply with BGH visitor policy of two visitors permitted to
a bedside at one time.
