Brass Racks Icebreaker Tournament Supports Palliative Care
Brockville/Leeds-Grenville—The winning team in the Brass Racks Annual Icebreaker Tournament has chosen the Brockville and
District Hospice Palliative Care Service (BDHPCS) as their winnings donation charity of choice.
“It’s the first time since 2000 that we’ve won,” says John Vitols, captain of the Sam’s Brass Racks pool team, “and we always choose
palliative care. Many of our team members have had family use the local service. Palliative care seems to touch everyone.”
Sam’s Brass Rack billiard hall and bar has held the Annual Icebreaker Tournament for over 20 years.
“It’s a fun day for everyone,” explains owner Sam Major. “The teams pay fees to enter, and we hold 50/50 draws to cover our costs.
Whatever is left over is designated for charity, with the winning team deciding which one.”
Major says Tata’s Pizza made a generous food donation, which helps toward keeping costs down and the charitable donation total up.
“This year, we raised $1025.00,” she adds.
The BDHPCS operates under the umbrella of Brockville General Hospital, offering support at any point from diagnosis to bereavement—and
beyond, with families coping with loss. The team works with patients at home, in long-term care homes, and at both Charles and Garden
Streets sites of Brockville General Hospital. The nurse consult service receives no government funding. Donations to the BDHPCS can be
made through the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation.
