Screen for the Cure Golf Tournament raises $45,000
for colorectal cancer screening equipment

BROCKVILLE - The new Screen for the Cure Golf Tournament has raised approximately $45,000 for colorectal cancer screening equipment, meeting its goal in its inaugural year.

While the team of Lani Cahill, Brooke Mallory, Bill Logan and Stewart Spalding took the prize for top team with a score of 61 in the scramble, the real winners were the people of Leeds-Grenville who will benefit from the new colorectal cancer screening equipment which will be purchased for Brockville General Hospital. The tournament was organized by volunteers for the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation.

"Everybody is a winner in a tournament of this sort," said organizing committee chair Don Moore. "We have to stress that colorectal cancer is preventable and beatable. It all hinges on early detection."

Committee honourary chair Dr. William Redmond said BGH presently has six colonoscopes, two processing towers and two sterilizers/cleaners, and he'd like to see that number increase to 10 colonoscopes and see some of the older colonoscopes replaced. Each new scope costs approximately $35,000, and he hopes the new annual tournament will continue to allow more equipment to be purchased in future years. Each year, BGH surgeons perform more than 1,800 colonoscopies, a procedure that Dr. Redmond refers to as the "gold standard" for colorectal cancer screening.

"It's to save lives," Dr. Redmond explained. "Symptoms show up late in colorectal cancer. The earlier you detect it, the better."

Committee chair Mr. Moore was pleased to reach the goal of $45,000 due to the generosity of the 128 golfers as well as the sponsors and donors. "The generosity of this community in Brockville never ceases to amaze me," he remarked.

Committee member Jack Butt, a colon cancer survivor, said the tournament was also about raising awareness of the need for cancer screening. "Thank you for helping us make a difference," he told the crowd of golfers at the Brockville Country Club at the end of the day.

The tournament began just as heavy rainshowers ended early Friday afternoon, allowing for a sunny, pleasant round of golf for participants. "We couldn't have asked for a better day of golf," Mr. Moore said. "We have to be extremely thankful for the weather."

Organizers announced several golfing winners. The top team was Lani Cahill, Brooke Mallory, Bill Logan and Stewart Spalding. Darlene Weedmark won two awards, for longest putt (12 feet) on hole #17 and closest to the pin (3 inches from hole) on hole #9. Joe Malovic won the straightest drive prize for landing his ball 2 inches from the line on hole #10 at the Brockville Country Club.

With a scramble team score of 61, the team of Bill Logan, Lani Cahill, Brooke Mallory and Stewart Spalding took top prize in the new Screen for the Cure Golf Tournament held at Brockville Country Club on Friday, July 24. The tournament, a fundraiser for the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation, raised $45,000 to buy colorectal screening equipment for Brockville General Hospital.
