Palliative Care tournament
raises funds
for ‘absolutely wonderful’ service at BGH
BROCKVILLE – There’s still
time to register for the Friends of Palliative Care Golf Tournament on
Wednesday, Sept. 2 – if you act quickly.
Co-chairs Dave Publow and
Jim Cooper confirmed there are still some spots for the morning shotgun
scramble, which begins at 7:30 a.m. at Brockville Country Club. Morning
golfers can enjoy an afternoon cruise with Captain Andy of 1000 Islands and
Seaway Cruises, after enjoying lunch at the Country Club prepared by Mark
Walmsley and the staff of Kelsey’s.
Captain Andy and Mark
Walmsley are just a few of the community participants and sponsors who make
this a fun-filled day for golfers – and a way to raise funds for a program
that helps people through the final, difficult stages of life.
“The community gets behind
this because the community believes in the Palliative Care Service,” says
Mr. Publow. “I really believe in the program and in the cause of people
dying with dignity and compassion, either at home or in a hospital setting
that is comfortable – not by themselves. Palliative Care nurses are special
people. They put people at ease and make families feel comfortable.”
“The program is absolutely
wonderful, second to none,” adds Mr. Cooper, who has seen the wonderful way
the Palliative Care nurses at Brockville General Hospital care for the
patients and families during the finals days of a fellow Canarm employee
and, later, his own father-in-law.
But Mr. Cooper says that
while the cause is serious, the golf tournament is a day that is packed with
fun. Golfers enjoy baked treats from Tait’s at one hole, wine and cheese at
another hole, and sausages from the Butcher Shop at yet another. “We try to
entertain people while they are here,” he emphasizes.
Many local businesses have
donated great draw prizes this year: 35 framed prints from Hangups; a
40-inch flatscreen TV from Canadian Tire Prescott; a one-week RV rental from
1000 Islands RV; two watches from the Jewel Box; a Senators dinner, ticket
and hotel package donated by Dave Jones of Leslee Sports; a $4,500 furnace
package from Inter-Climate Inc. and more.
Most prize winners are
drawn from a hat; any golfer can win. In addition, there are golf prizes,
including hole-in-one and closest-to-the-pin prizes donated by RBC, and a
hole-in-one prize of a three-year lease on an Infinity car donated by Tony
Graham Infinity.
“We want to create a great
atmosphere so that everyone enjoys themselves and comes back year after
year,” says Mr. Cooper. “We want to give them a time that they won’t
forget.”
The tournament has raised
$1.2 million over its 15-year history and is one of the main fundraisers for
the program as well as a way to thank the program’s sponsors. The co-chairs
would love to see the tournament raise more than $100,000 this year.
Last year, the tournament
raised $154,000, but the co-chairs do not expect to see the same number this
year. “We know the economy is bad and it is has been a hard year for
everybody,” says Mr. Publow. “We didn’t increase the registration price, and
we don’t expect that we will top last year’s total.”
Most importantly, they
would like all the golfers and sponsors to enjoy themselves so much that
they return in 2010. Mr. Publow says usually more than three-quarters of the
participants sign up again the following year. “This is a big party to thank
them for everything they have done for the Palliative Care program.”
