NURSING ALUMNAE HOLD VICTORIAN TEA
As part
of the ongoing celebrations marking 125 years of community service for the
Brockville General Hospital, the Alumnae Association of the BGH School of
Nursing will hold a Victorian Tea for nurses in the area on May 12 from 2:00
to 4:00 p.m. in the hospital auditorium. For over 80 years, the nursing
school was an integral part of the BGH community—producing 1189 graduates
before nursing programs became part of community college curriculum in 1974.
“The
Victorian Tea is open for all nurses who would like to join us in
celebrating this milestone for BGH,” explains Alumnae Past President Shirley
Jones. “Currently, our membership has a total of 296, which includes 14
associate members living in the area who graduated from other hospitals.”
The BGH
School of Nursing opened in 1893, eight years after the incorporation of BGH.
Nursing sister Mary Nunn (Class of 1906) went
overseas in 1916 to join the Imperial Service, and ultimately was honoured
with the Royal Red Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace. Many BGH
Nursing graduates also served in WWII. The Alumnae was formed in 1923 under
the leadership of Miss Maude Arnold (Class of 1909).
“Graduates of the BGH School of Nursing live throughout the world
and return frequently to celebrate their respective reunions in June of each
year,” says Jones. “We are the envy of other training schools for our
commitment, cohesiveness and strength in maintaining the functional level in
which we operate.”
The Victorian Tea is open to all nurses in the area. For more
