Medical Miracles presentation at BGH June 22
All are welcome to Brockville General Hospital to hear Dr. Jackie Duffin

BROCKVILLE – Do you believe in miracles? Your opinion may change after hearing a presentation on June 22 at Brockville General Hospital.

Dr. Jackie Duffin, a medical historian and practicing hematologist and internist, will speak about Medical Miracles at Brockville General Hospital’s Annual General Meeting. This special presentation is open to the public.

Dr. Duffin is the Hannah Professor, History of Medicine at Queen’s University and author of the book Medical Miracles: Doctors, Saints and Healing in the Modern World, published by Oxford University Press in 2009. The new book studies the relationship between religion and medicine and analyzes more than 1,400 miracles from 1588 to the present. Dr. Duffin describes people who walked away from seemingly incurable diseases, from tuberculosis of earlier times to metastatic cancer. Her book has been reviewed in The New England Journal of Medicine and The New York Times.

Dr. Duffin graduated from University of Toronto as a M.D. and later qualified in hematology and internal medicine. In 1985, she earned a doctorate in History and Philosophy of Science from the Sorbonne in Paris.

She is a former president of both the American Association for the History of Medicine and the Canadian Society for the History of Medicine, which she served as founding webmaster for nine years. Dr. Duffin is the author of seven books, and during her career, she has received many awards and honours for teaching, research, writing and service.

The AGM will be held on Monday, June 22 at BGH’s Charles Street Site Cafeteria, with the presentation by Dr. Duffin from 7 to 7:45 p.m., followed by a break with refreshments and the formal AGM starting at 8 p.m. Members of the corporation will be eligible to vote on motions presented at the AGM.

All are welcome, and there is no charge to attend. Several hospital departments will have displays, and copies of the Annual Report will be available to the public. Everyone who attends the presentation will receive a voucher for free parking.

Dr. Jacalyn Duffin will speak at Brockville General Hospital on Monday, June 22 at 7 p.m. All are welcome.
