Hospital foundation launches appeal for eye surgery microscope
Cruickshank Construction
donates $5,000 as campaign to raise $135,000 begins
BROCKVILLE - The
Brockville and District Hospital Foundation has launched an annual appeal
with an eye toward raising $135,000 for a new surgical microscope.
Each year, more than 1,300
people come to Brockville General Hospital for cataract surgery, and doctors
say it’s time to replace the eye surgery microscope with a state-of-the-art
version that will allow them to better visualize the eye and provide greater
safety for patients. During the past 17 years, BGH surgeons have performed
20,000 cataract operations.
“We need your support,”
said Dr. Ardis Lindsay, who performs the operations on patients along with
Dr. Sam Stevens. “This will help us provide you with the highest quality
ophthalmological services.”
The first donor has
already stepped forward to pave the way for the appeal’s success:
Cruickshank Construction founder Les Cruickshank gave $5,000, which will go
toward the microscope. He says supporting the new appeal was an easy
decision.
“We used to give Christmas
gifts to clients,” he explained. “Ten years ago, we decided instead to
donate to hospitals in areas where our employees work, and we always let the
clients know this in our Christmas card.”
Foundation Chair Kevin
Tackaberry warmly thanked Mr. Cruickshank for his generous donation. “This
will help provide outstanding care to cataract patients at BGH,” he
commented.
Mr. Tackaberry encourages
other people and businesses to also give to the campaign and says no
donation is too small. “A large number of people in this area need cataract
surgery, and this new microscope will make an important difference in their
lives.”
Foundation Executive
Director Joan McLaughlin explained that the Foundation helps raise funds for
important programs and equipment for Brockville General Hospital. Along with
the Foundation events, the appeal is an important fundraiser. This year will
have a single goal: To raise $135,000 for the ophthalmologic microscope.
“We want to provide the
community with the best care possible,” she said. “It’s important to realize
that we need the most current technology and equipment. When your mother has
cataracts, you will be pleased if BGH has the newest piece of equipment.”
While the government
provides base funding for the hospital, the province does not pay for
equipment and some of the programs, including palliative care, music therapy
and cardiovascular rehabilitation. Only through the generosity of donors can
the hospital buy new equipment and provide funding for these special
programs.
Ms. McLaughlin said that
each year, thousands of people in the Leeds-Grenville area step forward to
help, and the Foundation is counting on everyone’s generosity again this
year.
“We don’t know when we are
going to need the hospital. We don’t know when a loved one will need surgery
or a procedure,” Ms. McLaughlin reflected. “But we do know that in our
lifetime, it will happen. Personally, I want to know that when I walk into a
hospital, my needs will be taken care of. When I was here as a patient, the
care was outstanding.”
