Donors step forward for Brockville General  Hospital’s Cardiovascular Rehab Centre

Knapp’s Paving and Landscaping Ltd. donates $10,000 to new centre; owner Lloyd Knapp challenges other contractors to do the same

BROCKVILLE - This spring, Brockville General Hospital is bringing something new and exciting to the community: A Cardiovascular Rehabilitation and Secondary Prevention Centre.

The centre is good news for Leeds-Grenville, says BGH President and CEO Ray Marshall. “Heart disease is a major issue in our area.”

The program provides health care close to home for cardiac patients in Leeds-Grenville, who previously had to travel to Kingston or Ottawa for rehabilitation following heart bypass surgery, for example.

Several generous donors have already stepped forward to support the centre.

On Friday, Lloyd Knapp, owner of Knapp’s Paving and Landscaping Ltd., visited the site on the ground floor of Brockville General Hospital’s Charles Street site, where the centre is still under construction.

Mr. Knapp donated $10,000 and challenged other contactors in the region to do the same.

He said establishing the centre is “great” for the residents of Leeds-Grenville, who now travel to other cities for cardiovascular rehabilitation.

“I think it’s important for the community,” Mr. Knapp said. “It’s well needed here and would save us from driving to Kingston or Ottawa. I’m happy to donate.”

“You appreciate this more if it happens to you,” he added.

Dr. Jay Bhatt showed him the centre several weeks ago, and Mr. Knapp said he is surprised by the progress in the construction since he last saw it. The drywall is being installed, and a rubberized floor and track will be added as well as specialized equipment.

Mr. Knapp challenged other contractors in the area to step forward with their donations. “Perhaps we can get some of the other contractors to donate, to match this or beat it, which would be great.”

Cardiovascular Rehab is an individualized program of exercise, education and counseling designed to help clients reduce their risk of future heart events and health problems.

At the new centre, Dr. Jay Bhatt, an internist, will work with cardiologist Dr. Jamie Hynd and internists Dr. Jacobus Steyn and Dr. Bob Beveridge. BGH’s multidisciplinary team also includes physiotherapists, a dietitian, a nurse, a respiratory therapist and a pharmacist. This professional team will help patients with:

  • Monitored individual exercise programs
  • Psychosocial counselling
  • Risk factor identification
  • Individual nutritional counseling
  • Group education
  • Stress management
  • Smoking cessation
  • Support groups
  • Vocational counselling

More donations are welcome for this important program; please contact the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation at 613-345-4478 or by email at foundation@bgh-on.ca if you would like to help.
