Brockville General Hospital Welcomes New Surgeon
The
General is happy to announce Dr. Karim Somani has joined the team of skilled
physicians providing quality patient care at BGH.
Dr. Somani is a General Surgeon. One interest is the growing use of
laparoscopic surgery—abdominal surgeries done through a small incision with
a laparoscope (telescopic video camera) rather than the traditional larger,
open incision.
“Toward the end of my residency,” explains Somani, “I was trained in
laparoscopic techniques. It has long been the standard in gall bladder
surgery and is growing in use with spleens, hernias, and colons including
cancer resections. It’s minimally invasive so it means less pain and faster
recovery for the patient. In time, it may become the standard of care and
that’s exciting.”
Dr. Somani has relocated here from Edmonton, Alberta. It’s quite the change,
but he’s looking forward to living in Brockville.
“I did a portion of my undergrad degree at McGill in Montreal, so eastern
Canada is somewhat familiar to me,” says Somani. “Brockville is a beautiful
small city and having the St. Lawrence River to look at doesn’t hurt,” he
adds with a smile.
Somani chose BGH to work at since there is a demonstrated need here for
general surgeons. Filling that need means OR time and resources—and that
translates into job satisfaction for Somani.
“As a relatively young surgeon and new grad,” he says, “I want to keep up my
skills and stay cutting edge. BGH and the other doctors have also been
receptive to my questions about our continuing advances in techniques, which
mean pursuing new equipment. Everyone has been helpful and accommodating.”
