BGH Nursing Alumnae Supports Maternity Ward

Brockville—The Alumnae Association of the Brockville General Hospital (BGH) School of Nursing recently donated $2000 to the BGH maternity ward for the purchase of a new neo-natal/paediatric monitor.

“The alumnae made the decision by a vote,” explains Gail Easton, President of the Association. “We felt that maternity needed it as we had not donated to this area of the hospital in the past. Our nurses let us know that this need had not been met and we wanted to ensure that we supported the Maternal/Child unit at BGH.”

The Alumnae Association does no fundraising. Donations are given over the course of the year by the members and an annual donation is made in memory of deceased alumnae and associate members.

“We’re thrilled to have this donation that will allow us to provide the monitor for our maternity and paediatric needs,” says Barb Ward, Unit Charge Nurse for the BGH maternity/child ward. “The monitor we plan to purchase with the donated funds is a versatile neo-natal and paediatric monitor that can track heart rate, respiratory function, and oxygen saturation levels—for babies, children, and even adults.”

The BGH School of Nursing opened in 1893, eight years after the incorporation of Brockville General Hospital. Nursing sister Mary Nunn (Class of 1906) went overseas in 1916 to join the Imperial Service, and ultimately was honoured with the Royal Red Cross by King George V at Buckingham Palace. Many BGH Nursing graduates also served in WWII. For over 80 years, the nursing school was an integral part of the BGH community—producing 1189 graduates before nursing programs became part of community college curriculum in 1974.

The Alumnae Association of the BGH School of Nursing was formed in 1923 under the leadership of Miss Maude Arnold (Class of 1909), and continues to be active today—maintaining its close ties to Brockville General Hospital.

Presenting the donation are (l – r) Shirley Jones, Alumnae Past President and Gail Easton, Alumnae President to BGH Maternity staff Barb Ward, Unit Charge Nurse; Stacey Feig, RPN; Michele Amyotte, RN; and Kathy Asbreuk, RN.
