BGH HOSTS VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION TEA
As part
of celebrations marking Volunteer Week, Brockville General Hospital hosted
its annual Volunteer Appreciation Tea April 20. Over 70 members of the BGH
Volunteer Association and Palliative Care Volunteers enjoyed an afternoon
tea in the cafeteria.
“The
hospital has three main groups of volunteers,” explained Christine Deault,
Coordinator of Volunteer Services, “with a total of about 340 people who
help BGH on regular and semi-regular bases. Today is one event that brings
us all together.”
On behalf
of the hospital, President and CEO Ray Marshall had a sincere thank you for
all that the Volunteer Association contributes to this community hospital.
“Having
begun in 1889,” said Marshall, “this association is one of the oldest
service groups in Brockville.” Marshall went on to note that Ontario enjoys
the benefits of 35,000 volunteers who give three million volunteer hours
annually to various causes in the province. “Last year,” said Marshall,
“hospital volunteers raised over $48 million through fundraising. Our base
funding is less than that. Our hospitals would have minimal equipment if not
for you. BGH—indeed all Ontario hospitals—would not be the same without
you.”
The
Hospice and Palliative Care Service at BGH also exists due to volunteer
efforts, being funded entirely through donation and operating with a large
group of trained volunteer support workers.
Hugh
Bates, Chair of the BGH Board of Governors, also praised the volunteers and
their dedication to the hospital.
“I offer
greetings from the ‘other’ volunteer group,” said Bates. “With the
hospital’s 125th anniversary this year, I was looking at the
early years and how things were done. The Women’s Auxiliary, as this
association was originally called, did tremendous work from the very
beginning to support the hospital in funds and materials. Times have
changed,” he added, “but our goals are still much the same.”
Guests
enjoyed a tea buffet, and music provided by harpist (and BGH executive
assistant) Lea Hamblett with her husband Phil on guitar.
The BGH
Volunteer Association celebrated 120 years in 2009.
