Angels Getting Wings for Palliative Care
Brockville—The Annual Angel of Remembrance Tree Campaign is under way! This
special Christmas remembrance hosted by the Brockville and District Hospice
Palliative Care Service (BDHPCS) helps area residents to honour loved ones
now gone and still missed at this time of family celebrations.
“You can choose to remember a special person by writing his or her name on
an angel and hanging it on the Remembrance Tree,” explains Joan Schwarze,
Charge Nurse Coordinator for the BDHPCS. “All donations are very welcome,
and any of $20.00 or more will be given a tax receipt. Our goal is to cover
the Tree of Remembrance with angels in support of Palliative Care.”
The Angel of Remembrance Tree began in 2001 at the former St. Vincent de
Paul Hospital, through Palliative Care. The funds raised each year with
these tokens of remembrance support the BDHPCS, a community-centered service
based at Brockville General Hospital that provides compassionate care to
patients and their families who are facing a life-threatening illness. The
program receives no government funding, and all funds raised for the service
stay in the community.
The Tree of Remembrance will be on view at 1000 Islands Mall from December
13th to 17th, with additional trees up at both the Charles Street and Garden
Street sites of BGH, beginning December 1st.
“We have volunteers to manage the tree and assist people,” says Schwarze.
“It is a special way to remember and honour those loved ones who have
touched your life, and are especially missed during this holiday season.”
