2010 Annual Appeal is “Joint” Effort for Foundation

Brockville and district—The Brockville and District Hospital Foundation (BDHF) has launched its Annual Appeal for 2010, aiming to raise $135,000 for new orthopedic surgical equipment.

“This year, the Brockville General Hospital Operating Suites need a package of orthopedic equipment to provide totally encompassing orthopedic surgical service to our community,” explains Joan McLaughlin, Executive Director of the BDHF.

The 2010 Annual Appeal Orthopedic Package includes power tools for joint replacement and repair, positioning devices for shoulder surgery and repair, and arthroscopic instrumentation for diagnosis and repair—a total cost of $135,000.

“Over the past decade, BGH has seen its total orthopedic surgeries quadruple, in response to our aging population,” says Dr. Paul Shim, Orthopedic Surgeon at BGH. “Arthroscopy—the use of a camera to look into the joint to visualize, diagnose, and repair—is central to successful care and surgery required for not only hips and knees, but also shoulders and ankles.

“The funds provided by the Annual Appeal will purchase new equipment,” he adds, “that will extend our current orthopedic services and provide new ones (such as shoulder repair) at BGH. This will also improve our waiting times for all orthopedic surgeries at the General.”

This is good news for the residents of Leeds/Grenville—and not only those in the aging demographic. Chronic pain from joint injury afflicts younger adults as well, interfering with their abilities to work and enjoy activities.

Diane Bowen, Clinical Nurse Educator at BGH, says her mobility has been suffering from a skiing injury inflicted over a decade ago.

“I had a skiing accident 11 years ago,” says Bowen, “and my knee was never the same. Over the years, I have had progressive deterioration and loss of mobility. It has become more and more difficult to navigate stairs.”

After trying to live with it for some time, Bowen agreed to a knee replacement. She is currently on a waiting list, scheduled for the new year.

“No one wants to live with chronic pain from joint affliction,” says Dr. Shim, “and the loss of mobility is just as debilitating. Donations to the Annual Appeal will help Brockville General Hospital acquire newer arthroscopic instrumentation as well as other necessary equipment for treating all joints of the body.”

The BDHF Annual Appeal will run to December 24th.
